HEMP SEED FIGHTS HEART DISEASE? Yes, that just may be accurate. April 2008, scientists at the Canadian Journal of Physiology and Pharmacology state the following (as reported in The Manitoba Harvest)…
“The results of this study demonstrate that when hempseed is added to a cholesterol-enriched diet, cholesterol-induced platelet aggregation returns to control levels,” noted the authors.
In English, this means that if you add hemp seed to a diet already rich in cholesterol (animal products contain cholesterol—plant foods do not), the negative effects of high cholesterol in test subjects may be minimized.
This may be because hemp is very rich in proteins, plant fiber (which scrubs the arteries of plaque/mucus material), and omega 3 and 6 fatty acids—which have been reported to reduce the risk of ‘cardiac events’ (see Science Daily:
http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2002/07/020726081422.htm).
Of course, if you stay away from animal products and eat a wide array of fruits and veggies—organic when possible—daily, and mix in plenty of bodyweight exercise (see
http://www.superiorbodyhealth.com/), it’s unlikely you’ll ‘come down’ with a heart condition.
However, I don’t see any harm in supplementing a primarily fruitarian, or raw vegan, diet with protein-rich hemp supplements. I just picked up one in a powder form, at Trader Joe’s today. I’ll mix a few scoops a day in with my green smoothies and post my results.
Remember, as cited by H. Diamond (Fit For Life), Dr. D. Graham (The 80-10-10 Diet), and many others—EVERY VITAMIN, MINERAL, AMINO ACID, AND ESSENTIAL FATTY ACID NEEDED FOR OPTIMUM HUMAN NUTRITION CAN BE FOUND IN FRUITS, VEGETABLES, NUTS, AND SEEDS. In other words…plant foods! Get off meat now !
Hemp is just another example proving this thesis.
A note to doubters: The World Health Org, The National Academies’ Inst. of Medicine, and many others claim that JUST 10 PERCENT OF CALORIC INTAKE SHOULD COME FROM PROTEIN. Broccoli is over 20 percent protein. Spinach…over 50 percent! Green Leaf Lettuce over 20 percent. Shall I continue?
In the interest of time, I’ll stop there.
Eat your plant foods,

Dear Paula:
A very good question, as there are tons and tons of hemp protein companies out there. I’ve been using Trader Joe’s (a chain store) brand hemp protein with what I consider to be good results so far. I’ve been doing very intense bodyweight workout sessions lasting an hour or more for months. That’s one plus hours of straight circuit training with squats, pushups, pullups, crunches, burpees, etc.
If I were suffering from a ‘protein deficiency’ from my primarily fruit diet, with added hemp protein occasionally, I likely would have seen some resulting weakness by now—NONE! I look exactly like my pics on my site, http://www.superiorbodyhealth.com. And feel great. Low body fat. High strength and flexibility. Tons of energy.
Thus, I’ve been reluctant to change brands. However—my next choice will be LIVING HARVEST ORIGINAL HEMP PROTEIN (organic). I shall keep blog readers posted with my opinion of this one.
Sincerely, Jeff Sekerak.
